BIGGEST MELTDOWNS

By now you've probably all heard about the headbutt incident involving the French soccer player Zidane in the World Cup finals. If not, get caught up here. It was ugly.

Baseball is no exception to "meltdown moments." The most recent one involved a Single A ball manager just....losing it.

What is your most memorable baseball "meltdown" over the years?

What a lesson in self control.

Whoa.

Hard to top that - I'm not sure I even recall Billy Martin or Earl Weaver doing all that...

Most recently, Buck Showalter had a pretty decent blowup at AT&T Park over balls and strikes (and was tossed)...but that was a mere blip compared to this tantrum.

And yet, there's nothing so exciting in baseball as a bench's clearing brawl! Come on. If you've ever witnessed one, you know exactly what I mean.

As far as basebrawls go, nowadays you need to categorize them:

1. Traditional pitcher versus batter - my personal favorite was 44 year old Nolan Ryan putting Robin Ventura in a headlock and giving him a few roundhouses. I think Ventura just wanted to ask the K King why he brushed him back. Wrong question.

2. Player versus fan - the best I've ever seen was Chad Kreuter, then of the Dodgers, charging into the stands in Wrigley Field after a fan stole his baseball cap. It looked like a scene from an old Geraldo show.

3. Drunken father and son versus a whole team (after attacking the third base coach on the field!)

4. Player versus Ump! (Dmitri Young's little bro in the minors who torpedoed his bat at the ump and hit a bulls-eye)

Oh yeah, Nolan Ryan vs. Robin Ventura was one of the all-time classics. Ventura got pummeled.

The drunken father and son at the White Sox game going after the Royals 1B coach was memorable as well.

Most "brawls", though, are pretty tame - just a bunch of guys jawing at each other. But I always love seeing the relievers run out of the 'pen at full throttle...

Yeah, most fall in the tame and lame category. And then there's this
all time classic assault-with-a-deadly-weapon on a Dodger, courtesy of a....ahem....you guessed it.....Giant. =)
