# 715

So he's done it. Barry Bonds has passed the Babe. I was out on a campground when it occurred, and only discovered that he'd hit it when I checked scores on my cell phone (Yes, I'm a geek).

It is a remarkable achievement, regardless of the cloud of suspicion over his head. Only 3 men in baseball history have ever hit this many home runs. And now, only two have ever hit 715.

The question that remains - does Barry reach Aaron's record? What do you think?

I don't think he does. If by some miracle he does, it will NOT be in a Giants uniform.

He will do it next year when he plays for the Pirates.

Pujols may be the coolest player in baseball right now. I appreciate the fact that he gave Bonds his props. I just hope this doesn't bring his accomplishment even more under The Cloud (as I'm actually starting to hear some rumblings from baseball fans that Pujols suspicions might be starting - it's sad, really).

Its early to say. Bonds is more relaxed now and without pressing might suddenly discover his homerun swing. This is a guy that can crank out five homers a week if people are pitching to him. That means he only needs to have about 8 more good weeks to catch Aaron. And if he's anywhere close at the end of the season, I see the Giants resigning him for one more go around. But if he continues at the pace he's set this season thus far, then no, enjoy him now cause this is his last season.

He could drag out his career with the Giants over the next three years, play sparingly, pinch-hit a lot, DH when playing A.L. teams and break the record by 2008. Lets say he gets on a roll and hits 20 more this year, that brings his total to 735. He could definitely hit 10-11 dingers each in 2007 and 2008 and break it. I wouldn't count him out. Hank was 40 when he broke 714, then stuck around for two more years and hit 12 and 10 at ages 41 and 42 in a reduced role. Know what I mean?

The Giants aren't going to pony up the kind of money he's looking for, not over 3 years, unless he's looking for a severe cut in pay - and my guess that's going to have to happen, because the market for his services (aside from SF) is slim to none (okay, maybe the Red Sox and Yankees join the mix because they can...)

Donny, no way he plays in Pittsburgh next year.

I'm glad Pujols is saying the right things. I really hope the cloud stays away from him. Good thing he doesn't play in SF, because the SF Chronicle would probably find SOME sort of dirt and do to him what they've done to Bonds.

Or just make it up and interview questionable sources ;)

Bonds needs to go to some crappy AL team like the Devil Rays, Blue Jays, or Mariners where he can set his butt on the bench and be the DH 4-5 times per game until he breaks the record. It would be good for a team like that and the extra ticket sales could pay his salary.

I don't see it happening but it would make things interesting. Just don't send him to the NYY.
