You Are The Coach, Part 2

After our strong showing in the Intergalactic Series classic, in which we steamrolled over the Ferengi's on their home turf (just a hop and a skip away on quadrant 6 if you cruise on warp factor 9 with Data at the helm), the galaxies proposed that we bring back the best players of all time by position and left this gargantuan task at the hands of baseball gurus at The 7th Inning Stretch! Holy Cow!

Lets not disappoint. Please submit your starting line up (please use same format as Donnie's - all the positions, a DH, a Utility player plus one pitcher and one reliever).

My lineup:

C - Mike Piazza
1B - Lou Gehrig
2B - Rogers Hornsby
SS - Ernie Banks
3B - Mike Schmidt
OF - Bonds
OF- Ted Williams
OF - Willie Mays
DH - The Babe
Util - Mickey Mantle (Stan Musial, Ty Cobb, Pete Rose....and Hank Aaron got snubbed!)
P - Clemens
RP - this is a tough one....oh man....arrrgh! Dennis Eckersley

Excellent followup.

C - Johnny Bench
1B - Willie McCovey
2B - Rogers Hornsby
3B - Brooks Robinson
SS - Ernie Banks
OF - Babe Ruth
OF - Willie Mays
OF - Joe DiMaggio
DH - Barry Bonds
Util - Ted Williams
P - Cy Young
RP - Dennis Eckersley (only because it had to be a true reliever, and Eck redefined the position. Otherwise I would have gone with another starter, like a Koufax or Spahn or Mathewson).

I'd defect to the alien side if Pizza boy were on the team representing the greatest of all time.

I'd make some slight changes. I'd want Schmidt at 3rd Base. Pete Rose at first. Satchel Paige (in his prime) pitching. And, since we're talking prime, I'd want Goose Gossage as my reliever (or that kid from the Sports Illustrated article about 25 years ago ;)

It wouldn't be us if we didn't occasionally call each on our choices in good spirit. Will, c'mon buddy, don't defect to the aliens. Here's my case for Piazza being on the list and you staying in our planet:

- 12-time All-Star
- holds the major league record for most career home runs by a catcher and counting (397 - broke the 389 mark set by Bench).
- He is a career .311 hitter, trailing ONLY Mickey Cochrane (.320) and Bill Dickey (.313) all-time.
- Had a streak of nine consecutive seasons of 30 or more homers.
- 1993 NL Rookie of the Year

Andy - Brooks at third was obviously for his defense. Schmidt was no slouch there either (10 Gold Gloves), and had the best offensive #'s at the hot corner.

By the way Will, did I mention Piazza played for the Dodgers between 1992-1998? ;)

Marcel - and if I wanted a high OBP at 3rd I would have picked George Brett. Ah, what fun selected all-time All-Star teams, because let's face it...we really can't go wrong.

Unless you pick Chris Brown at 3B, Johnnie LeMaster at SS, Rennie Stennett at 2B, and Mike Ivie at 1B...

Andy - I'd take those guys before I'd take Pizza Boy.

Marcel - I only need to know one thing about Pizza Boy to hate him for a lifetime and beyond. His Dad tried to steal the Giants and move them to St. Petersburg. My mind is made up and I'll never like him no matter what team he plays for.

Will - actually it was his uncle, but we know what you mean...
